Now is allow Edition of point, lines and polygons on gvsigMobile on an embedded GIS db.
(named FODB (object db) from the openmobileis framework)
Allow to have your datas in disconnected mode.
FODB db is directly synchronizable (with high algorithms for conflicts features resolvement) on PostGIS db (or other)

FODB database Linked directy to gvsig Mobile

Gvsig Mobile is linked to the embedded FODB database (openMobileIS framework) for GIS layers exploitation and edition.
Today, only point and line layer are possible.
Polygon will be coming soon.
FODB database can be directly synchronized with your postGIS (or other) GIS database on server part. The idea is to exploite your datas what ever your situation : with network or without.

IS Datas could also be synchronized/editable to the mobile device and be separated during the synchro on the serveur part. (2 differently DB (IS and GIS))

New POC in preparation

For info, I work today on a new POC with for objectif to mix Juan 's features oriented synchro and mine files oriented synchro.
The idea is to allow POI edition (and in the futur, line and poly) directly in the FODB embedded database and synchronizable with an PostGIS server database (as juan synchro) and allow in the same time a file synchro for basemap (in vecto and raster format).
The idea is to separate the basemap info layers from the idetable layers. The basemap is often very huge and needs to have file synchro oriented (can be bittorent synchro for red-cut management). The features edition synchro is for few datas and could be stock in embedded DB to easily work with.
The POC in the mobile device will mix intervention management, get specific info from features and statement as GPS for example.

New POC for Veolia with Tellus

A new prototype required by Veolia (France) is done with Tellus. The idea is to show the selection of different tube (for maintenance) on the map and o switch to OpenMIS engine to generate intervention report.

OSGeo live DVD released - Tellus included in it!

The latest version of the OSGeo Live GIS Disc was officially released yesterday. The aim of this project is to provide bootable ISO-Images and Virtual Machines which allow users to try out fully-operational versions of popular Free Geospatial Software without the need to install a thing. Everything is set up for you ready to go: just reboot into it, glance at the help pages on the desktop, and go.

The latest version is called Arramagong 3.0 and includes Unofficial gvSIG Mobile for Linux v. 0.1.6, whose main functionality is the feature synchronization, using the module from the Tellus repository.

The mascot of Arramagong 3.0 is this nice wombat (Australian marsupial).

The Open Source Geospatial Foundation, or OSGeo, is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to support and promote the collaborative development of open geospatial technologies and data.

Among other things, OSGeo usually distributes live DVDs (Linux) or pen-drives with a selection of open-source GIS software to gain publicity. In the next version of that DVD, OSGeo will include Unofficial gvSIG Mobile for Linux devices.

I will include three little PDF files in the DVD, which will be easily accessible for those who start the DVD. The files are:

British maps gallery

I have added a British gallery because in June there will be an important GIS event in Nottingham, and this DVD will probably be distributed there as well.

The situation in Haiti is an example where synchronization of POIs is a good option:

As soon as a surveyor reaches an internet-enabled spot, new POIs are added to the database and WMS clients (for example in a coordination office) can see the changes instantly.

As new POIs from surveyors A, B, and C get into D's handheld, D knows which areas need more attention and needs not update large amounts of raster data, since each point feature needs only a few bytes to be transmitted.

Mode A

gvSIG Mobile and the Openmis application (both on the PDA) communicate via SOAP messages (web services)

An alternative: implementing a FODB vector driver in gvSIG Mobile

One of the biggest advantages of the architecture proposed and implemented by Manu is that gvSIG Mobile provides an API that can be accessed via HTTP by any application (in this case the Openmis client application).

Another possibility is to add the Openmis client as part of gvSIG Mobile (ideally as an extension) so the overall architecture is simpler. I have done this with my gvSIG Mobile for Openmoko version. You can see here how it's done. Click to see large image:

As you know Tellus is a synergy between GvSIGMobile's project and OpenMobileIS's project.
It's a big project grouping many components : Communication inter-agents (based on SOAP), Bittorrent integration, OpenMobileIS datas syncronisazion, Tellus files syncronisazion, ...
In this way Juan Lucas Dominguez Rubio (the main developer of GvSIGMobile, From Prodevelop in Valencia - Spain) has proposed us to work with. Juan has got for objective to develop a new way of geographic datas syncronisazion oriented 'features'. But He'll explain this better than me ! You can follow his part on his blog.

Bittorrent syncronisation!!

And now, at least! The bittorrent syncronisation for map layers!!
Avantages :
- management automatic (due to the protocol) of the connection/disconnections. (Don't have to do again the syncronisation from the beginning if it's failed, due to a instable red for example).
- sharing datas (map layers) between all PDA connected to the tracker.
Inconvienents :
- A little bit more long to syncronise as in 'direct mode' when few PDA are connected to the tracker.

Here is how work the communication between the application gvsigMobile and the application OpenMobileIS.
As you know, both of these could works in the same instance, but also in differents instances of JVM. In fact, the licence on both projects are not the same and GvSIGMobile don't allow commercial licence. To land that, Tellus propose a system of communication inter-applications, based on SOAP.

Both part have a webserver, and communicate throught that way. (so an HTTP layer transport)

ComServices are implemented on each side to do/request some actions on the application.

Tellus integrated in the same instance of GvSIGMobile

In this example, Tellus is totally integrated to GvsiGMobile.
The idea is to proove that Tellus could be integrated a GvsigMobile (so GPL licence, and no commercial authorized) or not (so LGPL licence for the OpenMobileIS part). When you choose seperated instance to run the both applicaciones, they discut with the protocol of communication SOAP.

GIS software (Geographic Information Software) are very used nowdays especially througt the Internet and its public access, with software as Google Earth or Mappy for example.

The Valencian spain company Prodevelop is a partner of the company Iver which created of the open source Java project gvSIG (software GIS for PC). Prodevelop is a contributor of gvSIG and also in charge of the development of a mobile extension to gvSIG, named gvSIG Mobile.

As you know, OpenMobileIS is especially providing mobile solutions for IS (Information System).
That’s why, the combinaison between the both technologies (link GIS and IS services on mobile tool) are today a strong objective and challenge for the OpenMIS team. It will permit to have a real great interaction bewteen the two type of software and combine their power.

The project which uses OpenMIS and gvSIGMobile is named Tellus, reference to the goddess of Earth in Roman mythology.
Tellus has got three main ways of development :
- A real mecanism of map synchronisation based on the OpenMobileIS synchronisation engine to resolve the differents types of conflicts which could appends. And an optimisation of networks transfers based on the BitTorrent protocol.
- Providing a framework of development to allow interactions and communications between gvSIGMobile and an OpenMIS mobile application.
- Offering a real security for the datas GIS and IS during the synchronisation process and on the mobile tool.

Tellus is today in a R&D phase, and will be terminated (at least for the main points) for this summer (2009)
